Tara, the compassionate saviouress, is among the most loved figures in Himalayan Buddhism. Legend says she was born from Avalokiteshvara's tears of compassion, vowing to free beings from the eight great fears: lions, elephants, fire, snakes, thieves, floods, captivity, and demons.
